Ideas about the concept of ‘role’ in work situations: Here the concept of ‘role’ means working role rather than psychological or sociological role. A working role is an expression of how someone’s inner image (organisation-in-the-mind) manifests itself in work. Members of an organisation have as many roles for working in as ‘systems’ to belong to and act within Co-workers cannot be given a role (rules can be given); a role has to be discovered, tried and shaped If there are no roles, no rules are needed Working in a role is a skill (the role isn’t visible, only the behaviour) The role isn’t the recipe but the finished dish The role means constant adjustment to inner and outer processes (compare with sailing) Working in a role is the way co-workers can contribute to the company’s work – and develop their full potential at the same time Working in a role ‘transforms’ power to authority
